Today students took the Right Triangles Test today. If you were absent you will be taking this test when we return from Spring Break. I collected the practice test which is worth a homework grade.

I will be at a teacher training for the next two days and have left plans for my sub that cover the following topics:
  • Thursday - Factoring Polynomials
  • Friday - Solving and Writing Linear Equations
These are two very important prerequisite skills needed for Intermediate Algebra, which the course you will be taking next year.

We will be having the Right Triangle Test this upcoming Wednesday 3/26. The following are the topics that will be on the test
  • Know when and how to apply the Pythagorean Theorem
  • Know when and how to apply trigonometry to find unknown sides and when to apply the inverse function to find unknown angles
  • Know when and how to apply properties of Special Right Triangles
  • Be able to apply all of the above mentioned skills to word problems
  • Know how to multiple and divide radical numbers to keep answers in simplest radical form.
Today in class students worked in review groups in preparation for the test. The following are the assignments they worked on.
  • Textbook p. 428 #17-22
  • "Additional Practice" worksheet p. 166 (handout in class)
Homework Due 3/25: Complete Additional Practice Worksheet - skip #5 only. Show all work and answers will be reviewed in class tomorrow.

Today we had a guest speaker, Dr. Gorham epidemiologist from UCSD, share with us his research on vitamin D deficiency. Students learned how our bodies make vitamin D from the sun, what happens in the body when people do not get enough vitamin D, as well as the risks associated with over exposure to sun rays. He related this information to the trigonometry students are learning in geometry.

The next unit test will take place on Wednesday and students will receive a study guide on Monday.

Today students made sun shadow boxes and recorded the length of the gnomen at each hour and half hour of the school day. Students will be using this data tomorrow in class analyze and discuss their findings.

I am not assigning new homework tonight, but if you did not complete the assignment I gave yesterday related to questions about shadows be sure to complete those questions, even if they are for half credit.

Today students assembled into groups for quiz 5, then worked independently on the reflection problems found on the back of the quiz. I am using quiz 5 as a formative (learning in progress) assessment so that students can assess their own areas of need.

There will be a unit test next Wednesday March 26th. Many of the topics on quiz 5 will be on the upcoming test.

If you were absent today, it is important that you see me ASAP to make up quiz 5.

Happy Pi Day! Congratulations to all the winners of today's contest!

Today in class students worked in groups on an in class assignment (textbook p. 428 #17-22). We will continue to work on this assignment on Monday. I postponed quiz 5 until Monday. To be prepared for the quiz be sure you know how to apply the rules of the 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 triangles.

Today in class students completed notes on Special Right Triangles and worked in groups to apply what they learned.

Tomorrow I will be checking binders to award points for the following assignments
Please make sure your binders are in order and ready to be checked at the beginning of class tomorrow.

You will also have a quiz on Special Right Triangles and Trigonometry.

Also I will be getting a yummy lunch for any student who can memorize the most numbers in the value of Pi. Today students received back Quiz 3. Retakes are available until March 12th. Note I will not be available on Tuesday March 11th.

I reviewed answers to last night's homework and completed notes from yesterday's lesson.

Homework:
Study the following for the quiz tomorrow. Know the ratios for Sine, Cosine and Tangent (SOH, CAH, TOA). Know how to use the trigonometric functions to find side lengths of a right triangle and how to find angles of a right triangle when knowing the side lengths.
